MYP 5 Language and Literature - Non-Literary text analysis- Vivek Mukherjee

Objective of the Learning Engagement: Non-Literary text analysis

Details of the Learning Engagement:

Students worked in groups to analyse the essay "I Want a Wife" by Judy Brady that highlights issues like gender stereotypes and roles and societal expectations of women. Students were provided 3 guiding question which they had to answer after a class discussion of the essay. Students could use any presentation tool such as Canva/Prezi/Google Slides for their presentations. Students had to focus on the various lines of argument being used by the author, the figurative language used and assumptions about the audience and women that prompted the author to write the essay in context. Students needed to be aware of contextual limitations faced by women and their ways of trying to combat certain expectations.

Impact of the engagement on students and my reflection as a teacher:

Students were engaged in working on different presentation tools during the lesson. The tools afforded them the ability to be creative in their presentations. They took a lot of interest in the topic and the fact that the text was a satirical text.

As a teacher, it was interesting to note how the student reacted to the ability to work on different mediums of expression rather than focus just on writing an answer. The active interest taken to use more creative tools encourages me to use more such tools in class in future.

Divided into small groups, students embarked on a journey where each clue card presented a surd problem of varying complexity. They worked together to solve these problems, employing critical thinking and teamwork to uncover the location of the next clue. This engaging activity not only deepened their mathematical proficiency with surds but also fostered essential skills such as logical reasoning, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving. The treasure hunt concluded with the groups finding the final clue, leading them to a well-deserved reward. The event was a resounding success, making learning both ...

The Art of Teaching: Balancing Engagement and Structure in a MYP 4 IDU classroom- Nilanjana

I have been advising teachers on differentiation and adaptive learning as the best ways to support each child. This approach evolves based on the individual needs of each student. Now in my second year of conducting mainstream Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) lessons, I have found satisfaction in focusing on cohort planning. Key components I consider crucial for delivering my lessons effectively include seating arrangement, note-taking, time management, and aligning the class with the relevant topic. I aim to ensure that every child gains some understanding of the topic, with at least 90% of the class producing written work. The remaining 10% will require one-on-one attention, either during the lesson or in an individualized learning time (ILT) session. Additionally, pairing these students with peers who work well in buddy systems—under a set protocol to avoid disruption—can be beneficial. A well-laid plan that aligns my expectations with the students’ output helps gauge the effectivenes...
