The premise was simple: students were tasked with "escaping the chores" by correctly solving a series of mathematical questions based on Linear Functions. The activity was divided into five stages, each presenting a unique set of mathematical problems. Details of the Learning Engagement: In the physics class, students explored key concepts such as center of mass and moment, and conducted an investigation into the principle of moments. Building on this foundational knowledge, they applied these physics concepts in a hands-on project by integrating them with product design skills. The task involved creating a mobile structure, where students had to consider the balance and distribution of weight to ensure the structure's stability. Objective of the Learning Engagement:  Understanding of Direct Variation and the Constant of Proportionality Details of the Learning Engagement:  In the " Proportions in Action " activity, conducted for both sections of Grade 9 Extended Math at RO MPH, students engaged in identifying and connecting tables, graphs, and equations with six different real-life situations representing direct variation. The activity involved pre-provided tables, graphs, and equations that students had to analyze and match with the given scenarios. The activity required students to paste their matched findings on chart paper. Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teachers: This visual representation helped reinforce their understanding of direct variation and the constant of proportionality. The Art of Teaching: Balancing Engagement and Structure in a MYP 4 IDU classroom- Nilanjana

I have been advising teachers on differentiation and adaptive learning as the best ways to support each child. This approach evolves based on the individual needs of each student. Now in my second year of conducting mainstream Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) lessons, I have found satisfaction in focusing on cohort planning. Key components I consider crucial for delivering my lessons effectively include seating arrangement, note-taking, time management, and aligning the class with the relevant topic. I aim to ensure that every child gains some understanding of the topic, with at least 90% of the class producing written work. The remaining 10% will require one-on-one attention, either during the lesson or in an individualized learning time (ILT) session. Additionally, pairing these students with peers who work well in buddy systems—under a set protocol to avoid disruption—can be beneficial. Divided into small groups, students embarked on a journey where each clue card presented a surd problem of varying complexity. They worked together to solve these problems, employing critical thinking and teamwork to uncover the location of the next clue. This engaging activity not only deepened their mathematical proficiency with surds but also fostered essential skills such as logical reasoning, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving. Objective of the Learning Engagement Solving equations that involves modulus Details of the Learning Engagement: The "Absolute Value Equations Dominoes" activity was designed to provide students with an engaging way to practice solving absolute value equations. In this activity, students received 16 puzzle pieces, each containing either an absolute value equation or its solution. The task was to arrange the pieces into a 4x4 grid where the edges of adjacent pieces match correctly with equations and their solutions. Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: The hands-on nature of the activity reinforced their understanding through repeated practice, while the immediate feedback from the puzzle pieces allowed them to self-correct and learn from mistakes quickly. Objective of the Learning Engagement: Using a tea bag experiment as a model, students will be able to define the diffusion process, explain the elements influencing its rate, and explore the effects of external variables on diffusion. Through a practical, visible experiment, this goal seeks to enhance students' comprehension of diffusion while encouraging critical thinking and the application of scientific ideas. Objective of the Learning Engagement: To promote critical thinking and communicating information in a logical way which helps in forming conjectures. Details of the Learning Engagement: Students have engaged in a practical application of both measurement and geometry concepts to determine the distances between each runner on the race track. The students used a measuring tape to measure the radius of the track and also the width of each lane. Then students applied perimeter of the circle, arc formulae to check whether the race track is exactly 200 metres or not. In a relay race, the second runner always stands ahead than the first runner (runner in the inner most lane) and the third person stands ahead than the second person and so on.. Peer learning - from collaborative writing to individual writing Learning Engagement: The first unit for grade 9 revolved around Task 3 that requires three things of the children: an understanding and application of the Global Context, connection with the prompt to create a nonfictional text reflecting a particular perspective. Decoding the different strands is the first step and exploring it as a class on a common Google doc has proved very effective through the years. It helps children learn from each other and build on ideas. The children find issues that relate to each strand, the text type that would lend itself to explore this and are encouraged to create a GC based perspective question to explore the issue. Since the children learn best from and alongside peers, I got them to cocreate a piece for the first, familiar text type. This was either a blog or an article.
