Bringing Stories to Life: When Reading Meets Sketching and Discussion MYP1- Mayura Tiwari

Objective of the Learning Engagement:  Response to literature Details of the Learning Engagement: This is an ongoing activity - the children take turns reading aloud. They are encouraged to respond through sketching in their notebooks what they visualise. Most of them do. In turns, those who are keen - they all are! - , come up to the board and sketch. Four children - a total of eight in two shifts - take their place at the board and sketch as the others read. I get the children to pause and we discuss important parts, making connections to real life, analysing the characters, etc. The purpose is to develop listening skills, oral skills and visualisation through reading aloud. I do stop them also to correct pronunciation, intonation, etc. I establish right at the beginning that I need to help them enhance oral skills and if it is OK with them will make corrections. I get the buy-in from all of them. Some children prefer to continue to read on their own and are allowed to do that. O...

Chemistry Mash-up Mania: Crafting chemistry with clay - MYP1- Prerna Karmarkar

Objective of the Learning Engagement: The objective of this activity is to help students understand and differentiate between elements, compounds, and mixtures through interactive and hands-on approaches. By creating and analyzing physical models using colored clay and participating in a role-play activity, students can visualize molecular structures, embody atomic interactions, and engage with abstract chemical concepts in a tangible and meaningful way, fostering deeper comprehension and retention. Details of the Learning Engagement: Project Task given: Students were assigned a task to create a 3D molecular model set using coloured clay balls to represent elements, compounds, and mixtures. Students worked in groups to construct and classify examples of each. Students will document their observations and reasoning for classifying models as elements, compounds, or mixtures in the provided reflection sheet. Analogical Connection: Students worked in groups to create 3D molecular models us...

Fostering ATL Skills Through Peer Assessment in Science- MYP 1- Sheeba Abraham

Objective of the Learning Engagement: For a High -Quality learning and teaching -developing ATL skill-Students will develop their Approaches to Learning (ATL) communication skills by engaging in peer assessment, where they will practice giving and receiving meaningful feedback. This process will help them reflect on their own understanding, improve their work based on peer suggestions, and provide constructive feedback to others in a supportive and respectful manner. Details of the Learning Engagement: In this learning engagement, students designed a lab report for their investigation on how different materials affect the thermal transfer of an insulated object. As part of the lab report, students formulated a clear research question, proposed a hypothesis, identified the variables, listed the required apparatus, and wrote a step-by-step logical method to conduct the investigation. Once their reports were completed, each student was assigned a peer’s work to assess. The teacher provide...

MYP 1-2 IDU Tuning in for the theme Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion.- Ms Soma Guha

The students of grades 6 and 7 engaged in a Tuning In session for their Form Day centred around fostering an attitude of inclusion within our community in the first week of December 2023. The theme for  the form day this year is Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion. To kick off the interactive session, the students watched a thought-provoking Ted Talk by eleven-year-old Cole Blakeway .  He shared his heartwarming experiences and deep connection with his 44-year-old autistic uncle, emphasizing the importance of embracing differences.   In an effort to comprehend the diversity within our school, students from both grades actively participated by sharing their thoughts and perspectives. By looking at data collected from grade 6 and 7 students about their culture, learning style, food choices etc,  the students gained insight into the rich tapestry of cultures, learning styles, food preferences, and hobbies present within the community. The exercise highlighted that...

MYP 1 Mathematics- Understanding of Key words in Algebra- Deepika Gupta

Objective of Learning Engagement:  Understanding of Key words in Algebra - Variables, Terms, Algebraic Expressions, Like Terms and Combining the Like Terms. Details of Learning Engagement: Students were given cutouts of 2 -3 different colours and asked to group them as per their colours. While grouping in different colours they were explained the key word - variables. They then counted the number of cutouts of each colour to understand how to write an Algebraic Expression as a combination of numerical numbers and variables. (Eg 3b + 5r where b and r represent blue and red respectively) This led them to the keyword Terms - Like Terms and Unlike Terms. Followed by Combining of the like terms. Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: This hands-on activity with their shoulder partner helped them get introduced to the Keywords of Algebra. It was easy for them to relate to and understand the need for studying algebra. They were engaged while collaborating and to...

MYP 1 Culture of Acceptance- Language and Literature- Mayura Tiwari

Objective of the Learning Engagement: To recap learning from a unit and building empathy Details of the Learning Engagement: The unit was on building a culture of acceptance through the reading of " The Boy at the Back of the Class " by Onjali K Rauf. After completing the unit and the summative, I wanted to let the children build empathy but through a fun activity. I had recently, on researching about learning through games, come across one on Minecraft where they had to build a refugee camp adhering to UNHCR standards. So I decided to get the children to engage with this. I also gave them the option to create a board game - online or offline - around the book. A couple of children wanted to make grammar related games. I gave them three lessons to create the games and then they had each play these. One of these was to act out scenes. Several children created the Refugee camp. Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: There was a lot of excitement as t...

MYP 1 Visual Arts- Creating Animal Sculptures using Clay- Tinni Arora

Objective of the Learning Engagement: Creating   Animal Sculpture by using their observation and creativity skills Details of the Learning Engagement: This exercise was to help improve students' observation skills. They were provided with plastic animals and were asked to incorporate any 3 specific feature of the animal into their sculpture. The whole idea of the exercise was not to copy the same animal but observe specific features and practice that using clay. While learning to sculpt they also practiced on the basics of using clay. It's an ongoing activity. Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: It was interesting to see the little details they observed and also how creative they got while adding attributes of their own choice. A good blend of observation and creative skills. Pictures: - Tinni Arora

MYP 1 Visual Art- Learners engaged in creating Shades and Tints- Tinni Arora

Objective of the Learning Engagement: To learn how to create tints (light) and shades (dark) of different colors. Details of the Learning Engagement: Students watched a video and had a class discussion on how to create the light and dark hues of a particular color, called Tints and Shades respectively, by using just the base color, white and black. This exercise will help them in future to recognize different hues of the same color, practice color mixing and easily follow the same while painting. Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: As each group of 3 or 4 students were asked to choose one base color, it was nice to see how beautifully they divided the work amongst themselves and guided each other. It was also a good exercise for us to teach them on how to use poster color as they rarely work with this medium in the appropriate manner. Video: Pictures: - Tinni Arora

MYP 1 Math Composite numbers as a product of prime factors- Meghna Kaushik

L earning experience for MYP Year 1 that we did in class today to identify and visualize composite numbers as a product of prime factors. Students made a number trail using building blocks through which they were able to identify the prime factors of numbers up to 20.   The composite numbers will have the same colors as their prime factors. Students were able to visually see that prime numbers are only divisible by themselves (each being a lone cube) and that composite numbers are simply composed of primes (multiple cubes). Each child in the class was engaged and participative.  Extended question: Why is 1 neither prime nor composite.

Orienting MYP 1 students for Visual Arts- Tinni Arora

The first lesson with Grade 6 (all sections) was more of an orientation lesson with an ice-breaker to create connection and focus their attention. Sharing few points below – After attendance and exchanging names, I started with a general discussion on what all art media and forms the students have covered in PYP, this helped all of them to share, discuss with each other and help me figure out their learning for vertical articulation.  From here we moved to who all likes art and are taking any outside art lessons.  Finally, from here we discussed about Masterclasses and student led lessons. This created a very interesting atmosphere where students shared what media or form of art they would like to teach their classmates. As I suggested this to be a collaborative exercise, so they themselves started teaming up as well.  For differentiation purpose, the quieter students were asked about which medium they would like to improve on or need help with and which all studen...
