MYP 1-2 IDU Tuning in for the theme Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion.- Ms Soma Guha

The students of grades 6 and 7 engaged in a Tuning In session for their Form Day centred around fostering an attitude of inclusion within our community in the first week of December 2023. The theme for  the form day this year is Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion.

To kick off the interactive session, the students watched a thought-provoking Ted Talk by eleven-year-old Cole Blakeway

He shared his heartwarming experiences and deep connection with his 44-year-old autistic uncle, emphasizing the importance of embracing differences.

In an effort to comprehend the diversity within our school, students from both grades actively participated by sharing their thoughts and perspectives. By looking at data collected from grade 6 and 7 students about their culture, learning style, food choices etc,  the students gained insight into the rich tapestry of cultures, learning styles, food preferences, and hobbies present within the community. The exercise highlighted that, despite hailing from different regions, enjoying different cuisines, and having diverse learning needs, they all shared the common bond of friendship.

Based on their comprehension, the students worked together in groups to complete an interesting task. They created an "issue tree" for some hypothetical scenarios to analyze the causes, effects, and potential solutions for the many "Othering" scenarios. The talks attempted to increase awareness of the value of inclusivity by focusing on the diversity seen in the educational setting.

A meaningful conversation about how students should actively encourage inclusivity among their peers concluded the session. Encouraging them to embrace their unique ways of fostering inclusion beyond within the entire school community and the confines of the classroom was emphasised.

Ms. Mayura, Akanksha and I led these sessions.  I am sure students are now in a better position to understand the theme and all set to learn about it in different disciplines.

One of the 2 planned events to understand diversity and inclusion was an online interaction with interaction with Keya Hatkar, yesterday. Keya is a 12-year-old child suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy .You can know more about her here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcJ5Y1CJz04&t=1sThis was organized by Ms. Mayura.

The next one was scheduled on the 15th of December. Grade 7 , when students attended a guest lecture with Dr Ashish Faujdar,  on Genetics disorders, organized by Ms. Nidhi Periwal.

We hope that these interactions will make a difference in our efforts to promote inclusivity.

Beyond Black and White: Teaching Moral Complexity Through All My Sons- MYP 4 English LAL- Vivek Mukherjee

Objective of the Learning Engagement:  To study the motivations behind decision making Details of the Learning Engagement: Today in my Grade 9 English class, we explored the idea of decision-making and what drives people to make the choices they do. Our focus was Joe Keller’s fateful decision to ship faulty airplane parts in Arthur Miller’s timeless play All My Sons. Students reflected on what lay behind Keller’s choice: was it mainly socio-economic pressure, or was it a result of his deeply flawed character? This sparked a lively debate in class, with many different perspectives coming to the surface. To wrap up, the students created posters that tried to justify Keller’s decision-making process from different angles.   Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: It was inspiring to see such young learners engaging passionately with themes like war profiteering, morality, and survival under extraordinary circumstances. That’s the real magic of literature...

Bringing Stories to Life: When Reading Meets Sketching and Discussion MYP1- Mayura Tiwari

Objective of the Learning Engagement:  Response to literature Details of the Learning Engagement: This is an ongoing activity - the children take turns reading aloud. They are encouraged to respond through sketching in their notebooks what they visualise. Most of them do. In turns, those who are keen - they all are! - , come up to the board and sketch. Four children - a total of eight in two shifts - take their place at the board and sketch as the others read. I get the children to pause and we discuss important parts, making connections to real life, analysing the characters, etc. The purpose is to develop listening skills, oral skills and visualisation through reading aloud. I do stop them also to correct pronunciation, intonation, etc. I establish right at the beginning that I need to help them enhance oral skills and if it is OK with them will make corrections. I get the buy-in from all of them. Some children prefer to continue to read on their own and are allowed to do that. O...

Multimodal Stimuli in MFL class MYP 1 Spanish -Rafael Pernia Molina

Objective of the Learning Engagement: To answer implicit and explicit information extracted from multimodal stimuli by working together to share knowledge. Details of the Learning Engagement: The students have to listen to audios and select the appropriate information detailed on the audio and do MCQ or crossing. Impact of the engagement on students and my reflection as a teacher: During the activity where students listened to audio clips and answered related questions, the level of student engagement was high. As they worked together, they actively supported one another, helping to ensure that all questions were answered and no gaps were left uncovered. This collaborative environment fostered peer learning and encouraged the development of listening and interpretative skills through shared understanding. However, as a teacher, I observed that while collaboration was beneficial in building confidence and promoting teamwork, it may have limited opportunities to identify individual liste...
