Grid Masters: How Block Building Unlocked Area Concepts- MYP1 Math- Moksha Sharma

Objective of the Learning Engagement Block Builders: The Area Challenge! Understand the concept of area by constructing grids, applying multiplication to calculate area, and refining problem-solving skills through hands-on activities and collaboration. Details of the Learning Engagement: Students were provided with blocks to create a grid of their chosen dimensions by selecting the number of blocks they wished to use. They were then tasked with determining the total area covered by their grid. Beginners counted individual blocks to find the area, while those familiar with the area formula applied it and verified their answers by counting. This approach allowed students to develop a conceptual understanding of area, bridging the gap between concrete and abstract methods. Those who completed the task quickly were given cards with specific area values and challenged to rearrange their blocks to match the given area. This encouraged them to explore different length and width combinations, ...

Fence It Up: The Perimeter Challenge!- Math MYP 1- Moksha Sharma

Objective of the Learning Engagement:   To develop students’ understanding of perimeter through real-world applications, problem-solving, and hands-on activities that foster spatial reasoning, critical thinking, and collaboration. Details of the Learning Engagement: As part of a hands-on mathematics and design project, students were tasked with creating a rectangular garden for their school, intended for growing vegetables and flowers. The primary goal was to determine the amount of fencing needed to enclose the garden for plant protection. Students carefully measured the dimensions of their proposed garden and calculated the perimeter using the appropriate mathematical formula. This real-world application allowed them to develop their skills in measurement, multiplication, and perimeter calculation while reinforcing the importance of precision in mathematical problem-solving. For students who completed the task quickly, an additional challenge was introduced to extend their learni...

Making Biology Fun: A Hands-On Approach to Cell Organelles- MYP 1 Science-Bhavesh Bhadaraka

Objective of the Learning Engagement: The objective of this learning engagement is to help students understand the structure and functions of cell organelles through an analogical approach by comparing cell organelles to components of a house, café, or office. This approach will foster creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of cellular biology. Students will also develop their inquiry skills by acting as Socratic thinkers, generating critical questions for further exploration. Details of the Learning Engagement: Project Task :  Students were assigned to build a sustainable model of a house, café, or working office using household materials. Analogical Connection: Students then connected components of their models to cell organelles, such as: Cell membrane: Entrance/security gate (controls what goes in and out) Nucleus: Manager’s office (controls overall operations) Mitochondria: Power supply room (provides energy) Endoplasmic reticulum: Hallways for staff moveme...

Transforming the Classroom into a Shopping Mall: A Learning Engagement- MYP 1 Mathematics- Moksha Sharma

Objective of the Learning Engagement: Calculate discounts and sale prices to make informed purchasing decisions. Details of the Learning Engagement: The Shopping Spree activity was designed to enhance student's learning of discount and sale price with a real life world scenario of a shopping mall. The classroom is designed as a shopping mall where there are different shops of Clothing, Electronics and Bags. Every shop is offering the articles at different discount rates. Students in groups are required to purchase items from every shop and calculate the final price to be paid after applying discount on it. A cashier is also assigned in the activity where the dummy money is being paid to purchase the items. The cashier was supposed to do the addition and subtraction of the prices of different articles in order to make an accurate bill. To give a real time effect to the activity for developing students' interest following steps have been taken- a) Labels of shopping mall, clothin...

MYP 1 Research workshop- Lekha Mukherjee

Objective of the Learning Engagement: Understanding research and how to plan it Details of the Learning Engagement: This is a 4 part research workshop where the aspect of research is broken down into its main components. MYP 1 students are taken through these so as to help them understand the importance of research, how to plan it, how to go about it and how to use it in their tasks. Impact of the engagement on students and teacher's reflection: Students understand how to streamline their research questions and thereby, their actual research, ensuring in-depth understanding of the topics they have choose to look into. They also understand how to ensure that they have authentic information, paraphrase and summarise it appropriately and cite their sources as well. Giving them this training in MYP 1 itself allows for them to use this knowledge across subjects and moving forward to higher grades too.

MYP 1 Science Understanding through Mesocosm - Eshita Chatterjee

Objective of the Learning Engagement To understand and study interactions(RC) between various factors in the ecosystem (KC) and how interaction of factors contribute and affect to the maintaining of balance (RC) in the ecosystem, by observing and recording data of their self created scientific tool-Mesocosm (GC). Details of the Learning Engagement: Students were given opportunity to create their own scientific tools, Mesocosm & a Scientific Journal. A prior knowledge about the mesocosm was developed through inquiry based learning in class, in the context of sustainability. Learning experiences were created to provide guidance for making of mesocosm and further evaluate the significance of this scientific tool. Following that, students made their own mesocosms to study the interactions between various factors and how it affects the balance in the system, through observation. They are encouraged to record their observations in the scientific journal for minimum period of two weeks. I...

MYP 1 student's first experience of Science Lab - Eshita Chatterjee

Students of MYP 1 discovered the fun & magic in their science classroom by making observation of the demonstrations of two experiments, Blue - Bottle and Elephant toothpaste experiments. In blue bottle experiment they could see how adding of chemicals in a solution, could make a magical water that could change colour from blue to white, just when they quivered the flask. In elephant toothpaste experiment they could see how chemicals reaction generate huge amount foam, that covers up an entire trough in few seconds. It was great to see how thrilled students were to see the magic in their class and they were also encouraged to inquire the science behind the magic. -  Eshita Chatterjee
