Objective of the Learning Engagement:
To recap learning from a unit and building empathy
Details of the Learning Engagement:
The unit was on building a culture of acceptance through the reading of "The Boy at the Back of the Class" by Onjali K Rauf. After completing the unit and the summative, I wanted to let the children build empathy but through a fun activity. I had recently, on researching about learning through games, come across one on Minecraft where they had to build a refugee camp adhering to UNHCR standards. So I decided to get the children to engage with this. I also gave them the option to create a board game - online or offline - around the book. A couple of children wanted to make grammar related games. I gave them three lessons to create the games and then they had each play these. One of these was to act out scenes. Several children created the Refugee camp.
Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher:
There was a lot of excitement as the children played these games. They were able to connect to their learning. Those who created the refugee camp actually referred to the UNHCR standard as was required. There was a sense of empathy.
