MYP 4- Mathematics- Mensuration- Promoting critical thinking and communicating information in a logical way- Nagarjuna

Objective of the Learning Engagement:

To promote critical thinking and communicating information in a logical way which helps in forming conjectures.

Details of the Learning Engagement:

Students have engaged in a practical application of both measurement and geometry concepts to determine the distances between each runner on the race track. The students used a measuring tape to measure the radius of the track and also the width of each lane.
Then students applied perimeter of the circle, arc formulae to check whether the race track is exactly 200 metres or not. In a relay race, the second runner always stands ahead than the first runner (runner in the inner most lane) and the third person stands ahead than the second person and so on..
Students have identified the reason for the same mathematically and they found how much each runner should stand ahead than the first runner. They organised this information logically and formed a conjecture in finding the distances between the nth runner and the first runner.
This formula had been verified with the already established formula given by PE department. There is a minute difference between the established model and the formula found by the students. Students have analysed the reason for the same in the real life scenario. This promoted their critical thinking and using information logically to form conjectures.

Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher:

This exercise not only reinforced students' understanding of measurement and geometry concepts but also encouraged critical thinking as they applied these concepts to a real-world scenario. Additionally, making conjectures allowed students to practice reasoning and hypothesis testing, which are essential aspects of mathematical problem-solving.

  1. This is such a wonderful example of students effectively using geometry to identify the correct positioning of runners in a relay race, promoting critical thinking and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations.I can see that it has encouraged students to form and verify their conjectures using logical reasoning fostered deeper learning and problem-solving skills.

I was wondering how can you further support students in analyzing discrepancies between their findings and established models? And also how can you provide structured opportunities for students to reflect on their learning process and outcomes, promoting metacognitive skills and self-assessment.

  2. Thank you Ma'am for the positive feedback! I'm glad to see the students' efforts recognized.
To further support students in analyzing discrepancies between their findings and established models, I have done error analysis session and also consultation talk with our PE teachers, which they have conformed their findings through a new formula.
To promote metacognitive skills and self-assessment, I had asked students to write a report on their findings and they way they arrived to conclusions. This was done more with guided inquiry from me.

  3. Dear Mr. Nagarjuna Sir,

Your engagement on measuring the relay race track provided a fantastic real-world application of geometry and measurement concepts. By forming and testing conjectures, students developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Verifying their findings with the PE department added further depth and real-life relevance. This hands-on approach effectively reinforced their understanding while promoting logical reasoning and analysis. Great work!

The magic of AI Tutor -MYP 4 Physics- Sheeba Abraham

Objective of the Learning Engagement To reinforce key Physics concepts and improve conceptual clarity by using the Toddle AI Tutor for targeted revision, personalized questioning, and instant feedback, enabling students to identify misconceptions and strengthen their understanding in preparation for assessments.   Learning Engagement: The AI tutor feature on Toddle was introduced to me by Dr. Meetu Agarwal. As the time for revision approached, I decided to utilize this tool to kickstart the revision process. Upon logging into the Create AI Tutor feature, several options were available. I chose the Mastery Builder, where I input the syllabus for the upcoming Physics assessment. The AI then generated a set of instructions along with an AI rating scale, allowing students to be placed at different levels: Beginning, Emerging, Developing, and Mastery. Once the students were assigned their respective levels, the AI guided them with progressively more challenging questions. Upon submittin...

Beyond Black and White: Teaching Moral Complexity Through All My Sons- MYP 4 English LAL- Vivek Mukherjee

Objective of the Learning Engagement:  To study the motivations behind decision making Details of the Learning Engagement: Today in my Grade 9 English class, we explored the idea of decision-making and what drives people to make the choices they do. Our focus was Joe Keller’s fateful decision to ship faulty airplane parts in Arthur Miller’s timeless play All My Sons. Students reflected on what lay behind Keller’s choice: was it mainly socio-economic pressure, or was it a result of his deeply flawed character? This sparked a lively debate in class, with many different perspectives coming to the surface. To wrap up, the students created posters that tried to justify Keller’s decision-making process from different angles.   Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: It was inspiring to see such young learners engaging passionately with themes like war profiteering, morality, and survival under extraordinary circumstances. That’s the real magic of literature...

Bringing Stories to Life: When Reading Meets Sketching and Discussion MYP1- Mayura Tiwari

Objective of the Learning Engagement:  Response to literature Details of the Learning Engagement: This is an ongoing activity - the children take turns reading aloud. They are encouraged to respond through sketching in their notebooks what they visualise. Most of them do. In turns, those who are keen - they all are! - , come up to the board and sketch. Four children - a total of eight in two shifts - take their place at the board and sketch as the others read. I get the children to pause and we discuss important parts, making connections to real life, analysing the characters, etc. The purpose is to develop listening skills, oral skills and visualisation through reading aloud. I do stop them also to correct pronunciation, intonation, etc. I establish right at the beginning that I need to help them enhance oral skills and if it is OK with them will make corrections. I get the buy-in from all of them. Some children prefer to continue to read on their own and are allowed to do that. O...
