Cracking the Code: Enhancing Mathematical Communication in MYP 5- Reena Narang

Details of the Learning Engagement:

The students of MYP 5 were given an alphabet grid (as shown in the picture). Each triangle is equilateral triangle of side 3cm.


Students were required  to make up some coded messages for each other using bearings. We started with an example "CODE". Imagine we wanted to send the message ‘CODE’. We start at the dot in the middle of the drawing. The first letter is C, so we need to give the bearing and distance to the letter C. 

This was scaffolded for the students. after this for Task 2, students thought of a four letter word and wrote the instructions on a sheet of paper.
These sheets were randomly distributed and the students now tried to decode the instructions and tried to form the word. At the end of this activity they answered questions like: was it difficult to code or to decode ? why ? Where did they slip up ? and reflected on their learning.

This activity helped the students to reflect on the correct communication and notations in mathematics.

Objective of the Learning Engagement:  To study the motivations behind decision making Details of the Learning Engagement: Today in my Grade 9 English class, we explored the idea of decision-making and what drives people to make the choices they do. Our focus was Joe Keller’s fateful decision to ship faulty airplane parts in Arthur Miller’s timeless play All My Sons. Students reflected on what lay behind Keller’s choice: was it mainly socio-economic pressure, or was it a result of his deeply flawed character? Objective of the Learning Engagement: Review of Linear Functions: Escape the Chores Details of the Learning Engagement: In our recent MYP 4 Extended Math online class, we embarked on an exciting and engaging activity titled "Escape the Chores." This interactive challenge blended mathematics with a playful scenario, creating an unforgettable learning experience. The premise was simple: students were tasked with "escaping the chores" by correctly solving a series of mathematical questions based on Linear Functions. The activity was divided into five stages, each presenting a unique set of mathematical problems. Impact: Throughout the activity, students strategized and applied their mathematical skills in a real-world context. The excitement was palpable as they worked to overcome each challenge.
