Objective of the Learning Engagement:
Enhance problem solving and collaborative skills through a robbery investigation task involving Proportions and Percentage
Details of the Learning Engagement:
Students investigated a staged robbery case, with each station containing hidden clues in the form of proportion and percentage-based questions. They took on roles such as venom vets, cash trackers, space wizards, and chrono sleuths, strategizing in teams to analyze clues, eliminate suspects, and eventually solve the case. This dynamic setup also promoted differentiation in terms of process, environment and content.
Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher:
The activity fostered teamwork and problem solving skills with a deeper understanding of Proportions and Percentages. The differentiated roles allowed students to engage with the task as per their preferences. As a teacher, I observed that children were contributing to the task and were engaged as they took ownership of their roles to solve the crime.
