MYP 4 Math Extended- Treasure hunt on Surds and Question framing activity for Revision of Laws of exponents - Reena Narang

MYP4 extended group had two student engagement activities recently.

Activity 1:

Treasure Hunt

Objective: To revise the concepts of simplification of surds.

Activity: the students were sitting in pairs, and they were given twenty cards with one question and one answer (not matching each other). They could start from any card number. Solve the question and find the card that had the answer and then solve the question on that card. They had to do this repeatedly till they exhaust all the questions and all the cards.

They were racing against each other and only correct answers would lead them to complete the treasure hunt.

Activity 2:

Objective: To revise laws of exponents

Activity: the students were given A4 size sheets with exponential number written on it. For example 210

The objective was to frame 3 questions using three different laws of exponents to arrive at this number.

On the back side of the sheet was a variable with an exponent. For example x4. They repeated the exercise with different laws this time.

Once they had finished, they exchanged their sheets with other students and peer assessed each other’s work. Those who finished early were given answers of higher difficulty.

Beyond Black and White: Teaching Moral Complexity Through All My Sons- MYP 4 English LAL- Vivek Mukherjee

Objective of the Learning Engagement:  To study the motivations behind decision making Details of the Learning Engagement: Today in my Grade 9 English class, we explored the idea of decision-making and what drives people to make the choices they do. Our focus was Joe Keller’s fateful decision to ship faulty airplane parts in Arthur Miller’s timeless play All My Sons. Students reflected on what lay behind Keller’s choice: was it mainly socio-economic pressure, or was it a result of his deeply flawed character? This sparked a lively debate in class, with many different perspectives coming to the surface. To wrap up, the students created posters that tried to justify Keller’s decision-making process from different angles.   Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher: It was inspiring to see such young learners engaging passionately with themes like war profiteering, morality, and survival under extraordinary circumstances. That’s the real magic of literature...

MYP 4 Extended Math: Reviewing Linear Functions Through Gamification- Pooja Sharma

Objective of the Learning Engagement: Review of Linear Functions: Escape the Chores Details of the Learning Engagement: In our recent MYP 4 Extended Math online class, we embarked on an exciting and engaging activity titled "Escape the Chores." This interactive challenge blended mathematics with a playful scenario, creating an unforgettable learning experience. The premise was simple: students were tasked with "escaping the chores" by correctly solving a series of mathematical questions based on Linear Functions. The activity was divided into five stages, each presenting a unique set of mathematical problems. Impact: Throughout the activity, students strategized and applied their mathematical skills in a real-world context. The excitement was palpable as they worked to overcome each challenge. The activity not only reinforced key mathematical concepts but also fostered critical thinking and problem-solving. -Pooja Sharma
