On 21st July 2023, I conducted the learning activity titled "Unlocking the Power of Exponents - Tarsia Puzzle Challenge" to reinforce students' understanding of the Laws of Exponents and Surds. The activity aimed to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills among our students.
Objective:
The primary objective of this activity was to strengthen students' grasp of the Laws of Exponents and Surds through an engaging and interactive Tarsia puzzle challenge. And also, for me, it is to get to know the students and their working styles in the classroom environment. By using pre-made Tarsia puzzle pieces, students were encouraged to work collaboratively to match questions with their corresponding answers, thereby solidifying their understanding of the topic.
Activity Overview:
Group Formation: Students were divided into small groups of 5 members each. As I am not aware of the abilities of the students, I randomly asked them to pick a group on their own.
Distribution of Materials: Each group received a set of pre-cut Tarsia puzzle pieces and an envelope to keep the pieces organized.
Solving the Puzzle: The groups worked collaboratively to solve the Tarsia puzzle. They had to apply the laws of exponents and surds to match each question with its corresponding answer.
Verification and Fun: After completing the puzzle, each group cross-checked their answers with the provided solution. We celebrated their achievements and emphasized the importance of teamwork and perseverance in problem-solving.
Results and Observations:
This activity received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students. Several key observations were made during and after the activity:
Active Learning: Students were actively engaged with the concepts throughout the activity. They demonstrated enthusiasm in tackling the challenging questions and showcasing their understanding.
Critical Thinking: The activity successfully promoted critical thinking skills. Students had to analyze the questions and apply the laws of exponents and surds effectively to find the correct matches.
Collaboration: Working in groups allowed students to collaborate effectively. I noticed that students readily shared their ideas, discussed different approaches, and provided assistance to their peers.
Enjoyment: The Tarsia puzzle format added an element of fun to the learning process. This enjoyment contributed to increased participation and motivation.
Over all, this activity was a resounding success in reinforcing students' understanding of the Laws of Exponents and Surds. By incorporating interactive and collaborative elements, the activity not only deepened their knowledge but also fostered teamwork and critical thinking skills.
This is an interesting activity. I will also explore the possibility of using Tarsia puzzles in my classroom.
ReplyDeleteThis seems a good alternate to a math worksheet based learning.
