Student Led Masterclass in MYP 4 Physics to teach Astrophysics- Sheeba Abraham

Objective of the Learning Engagement:

To provide students with an authentic platform to share their expertise and passion through a Masterclass experience, allowing them to deepen their understanding, enhance their communication skills, and inspire peer learning by taking on the role of a facilitator or subject expert.

Details of the Learning Engagement:

To enhance conceptual understanding and promote student agency, a masterclass pedagogical approach was implemented. This student-led engagement was part of a broader initiative aimed at empowering learners to take ownership of their learning and authentically share their expertise with peers. Two enthusiastic student volunteers, Yashvi Varshney and Bharavi Kapoor, took the lead in designing and delivering a masterclass on the fascinating topic of Astrophysics. With thoughtful planning and collaboration, both of them conducted a well-structured session covering key themes such as:

Solar system, the Life Cycle of Stars, the Big Bang Theory and the expansion of the universe.

To enrich the learning experience, they incorporated a variety of engaging strategies, including-Multimedia presentations, real-world space imagery of JWST and simulations, Open-ended discussions culminating in a lively debate.

Impact of the engagement on students and reflection as a teacher:

Student Reflection on the masterclass experience:
Volunteering to help teach Astrophysics in our class was a transformative experience that deepened our appreciation for the subject and enhanced our communication skills. Collaborating with our teacher,we developed engaging lesson plans that included visual aids and hands-on demonstrations to clarify complex concepts like black holes and the expansion of the universe. Leading discussions allowed us to foster a collaborative learning environment where our peers felt comfortable asking questions and sharing their ideas. Guiding our classmates through discussions on topics such as spacetime and gravitational waves not only reinforced our own understanding but also inspired a collective curiosity about the mysteries of the cosmos, making the journey an exciting and enriching experience for us all. It also helped us to understand the struggles of the teachers.

Yashvi Varshney and Bharavi Kapoor

My Perspective as a Teacher: The engagement had a significant and positive impact on student learning. It allowed students to take ownership of their understanding—especially the two masterclass-led student experts, who displayed remarkable growth in both confidence and leadership. They were not only able to deliver the content clearly and enthusiastically, but also took initiative in making real-time decisions, guiding peer discussions, and evaluating collaborative efforts. It was evident that they were proud of their expertise and became role models for their peers. This masterclass highlighted the depth of understanding students can demonstrate when given voice, choice, and responsibility. Yashvi and Bharavi not only grasped complex astrophysical concepts but also effectively translated them into content that was accessible and exciting for their peers. Their ability to explain, manage time, and lead discussions was commendable.

  1. This Masterclass experience beautifully highlights the power of student-led learning. By allowing Yashvi and Bharavi to take the reins, you have not only fostered deep understanding and ownership of the subject but also created a platform for peer learning. I am sure that the innovative use of multimedia and hands-on demonstrations brought complex concepts like black holes and gravitational waves to life. It’s inspiring to see how the students’ leadership and collaboration enhanced both their learning and communication skills. How might future sessions further amplify student engagement and what was the impact on all students' learning ?

Beyond the Bill: A Math Lesson in International Dining MYP 2 - Vani Upadhyay

Objective of the Learning Engagement: Culinary Math Expedition: A Real World Adventure in Mathematics where students explored the intricacies of having a meal in a foreign country. Details of the Learning Engagement: In the ever-evolving landscape of education, finding creative ways to blend theoretical knowledge with practical application is key to fostering deeper understanding and engagement among students. Embark on a 'Culinary Math Expedition' a dynamic learning experience that takes students on a mathematical journey through the world of international dining, fostering a deeper understanding of how discounts and taxes affects the final amount of bill and currency conversion. The journey began with forming groups, or "dining tables," tasked with choosing a foreign country and finding a café or restaurant whose menu is available online. Action: The Math Behind the Meal Armed with a detailed handout, each group listed their selected menu items and prices. They dre...

Surd-tastic Learning: A Treasure Hunt Experience- MYP 4 Math- Manisha Batra

Objective of Learning Engagement:  Enhance understanding and application of surds through an interactive, collaborative experience Details of the Learning Engagement:  Our Grade 9 students recently participated in an exhilarating Surd Treasure Hunt designed to enhance their understanding and application of surds through an interactive and collaborative approach. Divided into small groups, students embarked on a journey where each clue card presented a surd problem of varying complexity. They worked together to solve these problems, employing critical thinking and teamwork to uncover the location of the next clue. This engaging activity not only deepened their mathematical proficiency with surds but also fostered essential skills such as logical reasoning, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving. The treasure hunt concluded with the groups finding the final clue, leading them to a well-deserved reward. The event was a resounding success, making learning both ...

The Art of Teaching: Balancing Engagement and Structure in a MYP 4 IDU classroom- Nilanjana

I have been advising teachers on differentiation and adaptive learning as the best ways to support each child. This approach evolves based on the individual needs of each student. Now in my second year of conducting mainstream Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) lessons, I have found satisfaction in focusing on cohort planning. Key components I consider crucial for delivering my lessons effectively include seating arrangement, note-taking, time management, and aligning the class with the relevant topic. I aim to ensure that every child gains some understanding of the topic, with at least 90% of the class producing written work. The remaining 10% will require one-on-one attention, either during the lesson or in an individualized learning time (ILT) session. Additionally, pairing these students with peers who work well in buddy systems—under a set protocol to avoid disruption—can be beneficial. A well-laid plan that aligns my expectations with the students’ output helps gauge the effectivenes...
